PAFX / Prosthetic Makeup / Character Makeup

BECOMING THE DEAD

Context

This zombie character makeup project explores physical deterioration, trauma, and bodily transformation. The prosthetic work establishes the altered facial structure, while the final paint treatment connects each element into a cohesive, camera-ready character.

Creative intention

The transformation from living performer to decaying character was developed through an irregular palette of pallid skin tones, grey, inflamed red, bruised violet, and localized discoloration. Layered colour, staining, and texture suggest impaired circulation, damaged tissue, accumulated grime, and progressive decay.

Role of PAFX

PAFX Studio was responsible specifically for applying the prosthetics to the performers and completing the character paint. Character design, sculpting, mould-making, prosthetic fabrication, costume, hair, and other production components were created by other artists or teams.

Scope of work

Prosthetic Application Character Paint

Process

The application process focused on positioning and securing each prosthetic element according to the performer’s facial anatomy. The edges were treated to create a natural transition between the prosthetic material and skin while maintaining durability throughout performance and filming. Once the application was complete, PAFX Studio developed the character paint to integrate the prosthetics with the performer’s skin. Each area was adjusted according to facial structure, prosthetic depth, and the location of the simulated trauma, preserving dimensional quality both in person and under production lighting.
